Healthstudies is an adult orientated training institution in the field of complementary health care, with the emphasis on the development of safe and effective therapists who have a balanced and grounded perspective yet have an interest and want to understand the energetic body. To that end, all trainers are encouraged to adopt a democratic and participative approach to their training, assuming the role of facilitator and mentor, in order to assist in the development of the necessary levels of competency and professionalism. At the same time, the trainers encourage personal commitment and responsibility from the student.
Healthstudies is accredited by PAB (Professional Accreditation Body) (www.pab.org.za) and is a registered ITEC (International Therapy and Examination Council). (www.itecworld.co.uk) The ITEC qualifications are supported by industry and are easily transportable nationally and internationally. ITEC has ensured that best practice in the work place has been reflected in the syllabus for each qualification and each has been linked to the relevant job role, as well as ensuring that the syllabus reflects the required level of knowledge and skill needed for a practicing therapist.
At Healthstudies the training and development of the necessary knowledge and skills is approached in a holistic manner, ensuring that all aspects of individual learning styles are met. Therefore, the programme includes face to face training, tutorials, experiential learning, self study, practical work and field work. Various related workshops are offered as well as internet usage, demonstration and presentation, research and project presentation and role play.
The courses offered are designed to encourage flexibility of delivery and assessment in order to maximise the opportunity for the student to complete the required training according to their own particular circumstances, especially for those looking for career changes.
By its very nature Bodywork therapies require a high degree of practical skill and competency. Healthstudies therefore places a great emphasis on the development of these competencies via:
· supervised practical demonstration and practise within the class environment
· off-site work where the student works within a community environment, supported and supervised by collage staff
· home practical work with the associated development of the necessary case studies
The ratio of students to trainer will vary from module to module, with the student in some instances being part of a much larger group. However, in all practical modules, the class size is limited to a maximum of 20 students.
